Anyone Know a Good Deal on a Cellphone?

So I lost my cellphone. Go me. I have an old one I used to use, and tried to get it activated. I find out that federal law requires that cell phones have GPS's so the police can track you when you dial 911. Awesome! Federal law used to dictate cell phone policy (how is this a part of the commerce clause) to require individuals to carry a tracking device.

And at the same time costing me 200 some odd bucks...

Awesome.

That doesn't sound right to me. Get a second opinion. First of all, GPS is satellite based, and requires a relatively huge GPS receiver. (at least a one pound device). Look at the GPS systems available for cars. Cell phones do not use GPS as best as I know. I think your phone dealer has his acronyms screwed up and is trying to cell you a bridge in arizona.

My ancient cell phone works fine with Cingular and I can't be tracked by the government any better than anyone else carrying a radio transmitter (aka cell phone.)

RESPONSE:

Already got a second opinion from someone else at Verizon. They just refused to activate the phone. Since I'm still under contract for quite awhile, I'm kinda SOL.
